In the sport of fencing, why is there a cable attached to the back of each opponent?

I do not understand fencing, just curious specifically about the cable pulley system that pulls the competitor back.|||It is so that the scoring can be done electronically.

There is a cord that plugs into the fencer's weapon, that goes under their jacket and out the bottom. The cord then connects to an outer jacket (for foil and sabre, not epee) and to a plug at the end of the strip. This way, if the fencer hits their opponent on target area (the part covered by the outer jacket) a colored light will go off, and if the fencer hits off target a white light will go off.

For epee the whole body is target, so the tip of the weapon has a depression tip, if it hits the opponent at a certain amount of pressure, the light will go off.|||Just a comment to your follow up - the cable doesn't yank the fencer back. The cable is part of the "reel" that is spring loaded. The reel just keeps the cable out of the way so that the fencer doesn't trip over it.

|||That is an electronic wire that senses when the opponent has scored.

There is not judgment by officials it is a connection between the epee and the scoring part of the body that completes a circuit.

I need money to fencing my farm please help me some one?

Please someone help me.|||I think you need to apply for a loan in SriLanka.|||Here is what you need to do: go to your bank and take out a personal loan at a low interest rate, or talk to your boss at work and ask him/her if you can borrow the money against your wages and pay it back by having a little deducted from your check every payday.

It's not a good idea to ask for money over the web because you could become a victim of a scam, or some one will charge you to much interest on the loan and give you trouble if you can't make the high payments, or people will think that you are running a scam yourself.|||Are you kidding me? What is the best fencing sword for me?

I'm just starting fencing, and of course I'm going to start with a foil, but what would be the best for me when I'm done?

I'm a 14 year old boy, 5'8, and 115 pounds, and I'm pretty skinny. Can you also explane why this would be good for me? Thank you!|||First of all, it ultimately depends on your preference. Physical stature does not make any significant difference, as a good coach will train you depending the weapon and on your physique.

However, there are distinct differences in each weapon that may make you more suited towards one or the other.

Starting with sabre, as that is my primary weapon:

Sabre is the fastest paced of the three weapons, and the only one to allow scoring with the edge of the weapon rather than just the point. While sabre fencing requires strategy and forethought just like the other two, the speed of the exchanges means that such planning is more short-term and must happen a great deal faster. Sabre is an exercise in speed, agility, and power. As a sabre fencer myself, I am biased towards it, however, each weapon has its merits.

Foil, the common start weapon:

You state that you will be following the classical method of beginning with foil. Foil is one of the two point-weapons, and has a style different from epee and sabre. Foil requires point control, unlike sabre, and is a good choice for individuals who are good at "medium-term" strategy. It provides an excellent base of the basics of fencing, and is also the most popular weapon, meaning that the pool of available fencers and coaches is much greater. Because the target is so confined, (the smallest area of the three weapons) foil is an exercise in control and accuracy.

Epee, where you can score off your opponent's toe! (that has always amused me, I must admit!):

The target in epee is in essence the whole body, thus there is A LOT more space to defend than foil or sabre. I personally believe it to be the weapon requiring the most patience and strategy over the long term. Much of epee fencing is knowing ones opponent and outsmarting them to an extent not seen in the other weapons (knowing ones opponent is important regardless of what weapon you fence). However, even if epee isn't as fast paced as sabre, it is no less rewarding.

Like I said, the choice is ultimately up to you. Your physique in no way determines which weapons you can and can not fence. I personally am very short (5ft), and very lightweight. When compared to my fellow sabre fencers, I look positively tiny. Thus, my coach focused on speed and agility. After all, if you aren't there, you can't be hit!

Pick the weapon that looks the most interesting to you. Watch people fencing, even if only on youtube, and think about how YOU would do there.

Good luck, and welcome to the fencing community ( if you stick around, you'll find its a small but awesome group of people!)

www.usfencing.org is the site for the USFA, the United States Fencing Association. They have a ton of info, and some pretty awesome videos too.|||Adding on to the previous answer, your weapon really depends on your style.

I am a very aggressive fencer (tend to go for immediate attacks, don't like the long process of playing with the opponent's blade. Therefore, I am a saberist, as I like the quick paced bout time.

If you're good with right of way, foil is probably your best bet, as it uses the most of any weapon (it's also the least bruising, if you care). Foil has the most blade work of all the weapons, with epee close behind.

Epee is the closest to "real" sword fighting you can come to in fencing; no right of way, each touch is a point, etc. It's also the heaviest weapon, so if you lack arm strength, you may have to work out for it if you're not already adjusted.

Something else to take into consideration is what weapon your club specializes in. For instance, my club's focus is foil, and it is therefore harder for me to learn more, as we don't have a coach who's primary weapon is saber. This is mostly just if you are looking to compete. Don't let it hold you back from a weapon you think you will enjoy above the others.

Another good thing to do is to talk to your coach for recommendations. Your coach sees your fencing more than anyone else, and knows what style tends to match best with each weapon. This does not mean you have to take what your coach suggests as law; it is just something else to think of.

I am also 5'8" and 115 pounds, and I've fenced all weapons and found no strong advantages or disadvantages due to size.

Good luck!

How much does Sabre fencing equipment cost?

I'm gonna start fencing and I want to know how much it csts. not the lessons but the material.|||For a basic kit to start fencing sabre, you need a mask, jacket, gauntlet, and a practice sabre. If you're a woman, you need a chest protector. An underarm protector or "plastron" is highly recommended, and required at all USFA sanctioned competitions. Prices for the basic equipment start at about $150 and go up from there. Expect to pay as much as ten times as much for FIE rated equipment, suitable for international competition.

Many clubs will provide some or all equipment or sell new or used equipment for a reasonable amount. You might also qualify for club discounts at fencing equipment retailers. Check with your coach.

You'll need either fencing knickers ($40-$50) and knee socks or long athletic pants. Court shoes, especially indoor soccer shoes, work well.

When you graduate from practice fencing to bouting with electronic scoring equipment, you'll need additional equipment. An electric mask, mask cords (2), body cords (2), cuff, lame and electric weapons (2) will run between $250 and $300.|||Try here

Is the oak from an old dining room table when cut to size suitable for outdoor fencing?

New oak boards are so expensive I thought I might cut and plane the oak from two old tables to use as fencing boards. The question is "Will they stand up to the weather without twisting?".|||Just an idea.... you might be further ahead to sell the tables and use that money to buy treated lumber that would last longer.|||It's a bit hard to say. If the tables have been indoors, and stabilized to a dry environment, it's possible that the wood could warp when exposed to weather, especially after being cut down to smaller sizes. It has to do with how well they're sealed and painted after cutting them down. I have to add that oak is not all that great as an "outdoor" wood, compared to cedar, teak or redwood. I understand about the cost, and if it's free, it's worth it, but it will take more maintenance to make oak last compared to others.|||Well with my tongue firmly in my cheek I have seen some gardens in Coxhoe fenced off with a row of old doors, and some even have the knobs still on!!|||Sure if they can be cut to size. Be sure to give them a good paint job with outside paint.

Where are the fencing training areas in the Philippines?

Are there any government run or public training areas for fencers in the Philippines aside from the Philsports Complex (ULTRA) fencing hall? If none, I suppose private training areas will do. This is for a research paper.|||Hello Rodolfo !

Forgive me but your question is sort of hard to sort out. Were you looking for European Fencing or Japanese Fenseing...etc as there are many variants of styles.

While waiting for others to post a more specific and accurate contact information in regards your search.

In the meantime, If you're serious enough I suggest the following step for you to take.

First thing you have to do is check your local yellow pages or phone book, look for the all the available schools your area has to offer.

If you're not in the area yet, call someone you know in the local area to scan, mail or list the martial arts section on the yellow page and have them sent to you.

The reason I always suggest to look in the phone book first is due to the fact you're pretty much searching for a school that are in your local area. You may even find one a few blocks down from you. Using the phone book as your first step will make your search faster and easier because all the information such address and phone number are available for you right there.

Secondly, if you are not having any success with this type search, After all the vigorous research on styles and decided on a particular style of martial arts. Try contacting a legitimate organization of that particular style on the internet and ask if they can refer schools or certified instructors available in your local area.

Please note that there are good number of good instructors that do not advertise or teach for commercial purpose thus you won't see them advertise anywhere. They are mostly located in private gyms or community centers. Just them a call and even if they don't have a program ask to see who they can refer you to.

Try all styles or any other styles that you have already decided upon. Call the schools in your area to see if they are offering free lessons or find out if they have any and how much is introductory classes for a month.

Taking ONE trial classes just does not cut it because at that moment you're excited and often times this excitement often leads you to making a wrong decision such signing a long term contract ( Gasp ! Never ever sign a contract !) or other bad decisions.

One last thing, I don't mean to sound abrasive, but If the above suggestion is too much work for you, then the probability of you being serious in joining a martial arts school is less than zero. I am sorry to say this but, I am sincere in helping you in your quest, but you have to do your part.

Hope this helps and good luck with your search.

I am getting a Dachshund and require temporary fencing! Does anyone know any cheap solutions?

My girlfriend and I are in the process of getting a Miniature Dachshund, the Real Estate have allowed us to get one providing we can set up suitable fencing, we live in a townhouse and would need to fence approximately 3 metres of lawn and 2 metres of tile on the patio. Any solutions would be really helpful. Its a small dog so we can't really afford to have big gaps in the fencing, and we aren't looking to spend hundreds of dollars.|||Maybe vinyl lattice would work. I guess this is going to be a pretty small dog and probably not a jumper, so you could even cut it in half lengthwise to get 2' high sections which ought to be enough to confine him. That can be done with a hand saw. You could tie the panels together with cable ties or strong string, fasten them to the ground with good tent pegs or landscape pegs.

However, if it was me, I'd be inclined to get the sort of wire pet pen stuff, it's called X-pen, that another poster mentioned, unless appearance is a serious consideration for your neighbours or management. It comes in different heights. The x-pen is more expensive, isn't terribly attractive, and will eventually rust if left outdoors but it's very sturdy, folds for storage, can be set up in different configurations, cannot be chewed and is very difficult to break, and if the sections are clipped together properly, your dog will not get through them. Mine tried once, got her paw stuck between two panels, and after she was rescued from that, she never tried to get out again. The X-pen might come in useful if you ever need to confine the dog while visiting or travelling too, or inside at home. It would give him more room than a crate but still keep him out of the way.

The lattice, if you set it up for where you live now, will be probably basically useless elsewhere.|||Pets mart has a folding fence about 24 inchs high and when layed out straight measures about 16 feet.This fence comes in pieces about 24 inchs long and you hook then together,you can make it into a circle or any other o get any sizeshape you want.They are not expensive less then a $100.00 abd you can buy two and hook them together to get any size enclosure you need.Anotyer plus is you can take it down to store or to take to the park.I have used mine to keep a small child from leaving the family room and to keep my dog off the carpet until she learned to go outside.What I like most is because it hooks together you only need to use the sections that you need.|||You can just go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy some wire mesh. You don't need very much, just make it a little higher than the average couch (miniature dachshunds can jump surprisingly high!). Make sure to buy something to prevent your dog from digging it's way out, such as bricks or cinder blocks (Bury them underneath the lawn). My mini dachshund has escaped plenty of times before I did this.|||You can buy a roll of what is known as chicken wire and some wooden stakes. It comes in various heights for about $10 for a 50 foot roll. A pig rancher wants to enclose a rectangular area and then divide it into five pens with fencing parallel to one side of the rectangle (see the figure below). He has 570 feet of fencing available to complete the job. What is the largest possible total area of the five pens?|||Do ur own homework|||Seperating a rectangle into 5 pens requires 4 additional sides running through the middle. this gives you total fencing of 2L and 6S since 2L+2S = P, the perimeter around the outside. So

2L+6S = 570.

He wants to maximize area in the pens.

A = LW

Rearrange the first eqn to L=285-3S

A becomes

A = W(285-3W) = 285W-3W虏

What are the differences between the fencing swords epee, foil, and sabre?

Im doing a research paper on fencing and cant quite find what the main differences between the epee, foil, and sabre swords are.|||A sabre has a broad, flat blade. You score by hitting your opponent with the flat part of the blade.

Foil and epee are more similar to each other than they are to the sabre, both have long rectangular blades. You score by hitting your opponent with the tip of the blade. You have to hit harder with the epee to score.|||The main differences between the three Olympic weapons are:

1) what target area you can hit,

2) types of attacks allowed,

3) the weight of the weapon,

4) whether or not right of way rules apply, and

5) whether or not your feet are allowed to cross over while attacking.

EPEE:

1) Target area is entire body, Nothing is off-target.

2) Attack with the point only. You do NOT have to hit harder in epee than you do in any of the other weapons (no matter what your average epeeist may think.)

3) Epee is the heaviest and most rigid of the three, with a large bell guard designed to cover the epeeist's hand.

4) No right of way rules -- whoever hits first gets the point.

5) Your feet are allowed to cross over while attacking.

FOIL:

1) Target area is entire torso and back. Head, arms, legs are off-target.

2) Attack with the point only.

3) Foil is the lightest weapon, with a small round bell guard.

4) Right of way rules apply -- you take right of way by extending your arm fully, and the defender must beat or parry your blade to take it back.

5) Your feet are allowed to cross over while attacking.

SABRE:

1) Target area is everything above the waist. Below the waist is off-target.

2) Both attacks with the point and cut attacks with the edge of the blade are allowed.

3) Sabre is lighter than epee, with a bell guard that wraps around the fencer's hand.

4) Right of way rules apply -- you take right of way by extending your arm fully and advancing, and the defender must beat or parry your blade to take it back.

5) Your feet cannot cross over while attacking -- running fleche attacks are no longer allowed in this sport.

Plus sabre fencers are generally far better looking than the average bear. (Yes, I fence sabre.)

I'm not worrying about the rest of my equipment (just some practice amongst friends, so I'll use club equipment to save me lugging mine around) and I don't want to carry the entire bag just for the foil, but I don't want to get in trouble for carrying a sword around openly. What's the legality (in Britain) of carrying around a fencing foil openly in public?

Thanks|||I'm not from Britain, but this is the best I can give. I studied firearms and the use of weaponry for murder. Laws on carrying those not on a national level, but on a local level. It would be best to ask your local laws-city wide, county, and so on. The carrying of weapons and similar objects change on a county, town, and city level even here in the Philippines. For example, in our capital Manila, it is illegal to carry a sharp object even resembling a knife "longer than the width of for of your own fingers". However, in the provinces, no such law exists.

Any suggestions welcome.|||There are several ways you can do this...besides bending some joist hangers, hehehe... Not knowing your comfort level with power tools, or what kind you have access to, here are 3 fairly easy methods of creating just about any angle you need for fencing.

First trick that comes to mind, is to shave the corner post to the angle you need. (Tablesaw, circular saw, or reciprocating saw)

Second trick is to 'build' a corner post to the angle you need...this is particularly handy, if you have a very large angle. (Tablesaw, and miter saw) You would want to use treated lumber, prime it with a good oild base primer (Kilz would work well), and then paint it to match... you would also want to 'cap' your post.

Third trick is to cut the vinyl rails at the angle you need (and the steel support, if any), and apply trim to help cover any gaps. This one will work, if you do not have to go too much farther than 90 degrees. (Recriprocating saw, and miter saw)

I have had a quote for feather edged fencing to be put in my garden. The fencing required is 14 square metres. The landscaper wants to charge me 拢650 to supply and fit. I thought it would be about 拢400. Seems steep to me. Just wanted to know what others think before I get it done and should I be looking to pay prices like this

Also He gave a quote to have decking done for 拢1995 for a area 9x5 square metres. He said to lay a cheap slab patio would cost more than 拢2000. My garden isnt hilly theres a small patio there at moment very old but sound and the rest is grass. Im not sure to go ahead.|||always get 3 quotes from diff companys|||it sounds expensive my mam paid 拢400 to have her patio done, i would phone around for some quotes I'm sure you'll get a lot cheaper than what you've been quoted|||that does sound a bit '''''steep'' - i had fencing fitted in my new build - they dont fit them nowadays in most builds - but it was 拢200 for 10 meters of fencing per side and i had 2 sides done for 拢400 - including decorative top edging - to fit decking i think its cheaper doing it yourself and roping in some people who owe favours to - its not a difficult as you may think - and deck boards cost from 拢5.50 a board - have a look at travis perkins or a local timber/builders merchant - as they will also have reliable contacts in the know should you choose to get someone to fit it for you - good luck|||You don't need to take the first quote you get. I'd call around and get a couple of them and you will need detailed quotes to properly compare them.

Will the contractor

clean up after.

what standard of work will they provide.

Does this include removal of any items torn down.

is the slab you're offered include the proper base

is there any guarantee (years)

It pays to compare but you have to know what you're comparing.

Also get references from people he's done work for and find out how satisfied they were with the work, services provided.|||Phone some more companies out of the yellow pages and get more quotes before you go ahead, it sounds a bit expensive to me.|||get more than one quote or do it your self ask some friends to help on the agreement that you do them a BBQ when the job is done.don't forget my invite.|||cheapskate|||Can you do the job yourself?

Have you got a price for the materials?

Carriage of goods, ordering.

Tool supplied.

This is a price for all in i take it?

2 men approx 2 days for the fence.

That's 拢400

materials say the fence is 8 metres long at a guess minimum 5 posts 拢50, 6 bags of ballast bag and half of cement 拢20 fence panels another 拢70. Bit of profit.

Sounds about right to me. The builder is not in it for love, you'll pay a mechanic 拢50 per hour and not blink. But you'll get what you pay for. As long as you can see previously satisfied customers i can't see a problem.

If its too expensive, try DIY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!|||I think it would be more useful to us to know the length and height of the fence and is it slotted concrete posts and panels of feather edge. As we dont know how many posts are involved|||i always get at least 3 quotes and ask friends/family for recommendations.

you should ask for a price breakdown to show matierial and labour charge then you can check the price yourself and know if there being honest and remember most companies will give discount to other businesses so they should be able to get it cheaper than you.|||go for three quotes and pick the middle one i think 400 is more than enough|||far too expensive...go to the local timber yard..then to the shopping centre where you will find plenty of hoodies/drop outs/low lifes/divs and dorks....take a couple home with you and beat severely with a stick untill work is done.....the cost will be 40 B%26amp;H and 2 cans of Red Bull!!!

How can I prepare my self for a new fencing season ?

I want to be in my best shape (or close to that) when starting this new fencing season. Does any one have fitness ex. that I can do to improve my endurance ? I already run and have a program but it's not enough. Thanks!|||Stairs and hills are what do the most good for me for fencing. It's a shorter but intense workout that doesn't take too much time away from fencing-related training, but still helps with the strength and endurance. You can get so much done in half an hour. Running down the stairs makes your feet move faster--it's the best exercise other than fencing for fencing in my opinion, running up stairs makes you stronger and running down makes you faster.

If you have a mirror and think you can practice lunges without a coach (and without picking up bad habits), getting quicker is always good practice. The thing I like to concentrate on most before a season is quick tight parries and working on good ways to combine one parry with another (I fence foil). It is also good to work on footwork, but I find it hard to do any good work on footwork without a training partner or coach.|||um, I suppose I would have to say just repetition of all the footwork and tactics, and conditioning...

When you run, you could add other exercises: like "high knees" or "karaoke" or "butt kicks"

Oh! Lunging with a medicine ball might help...?

What type of fencing do you feel works best?

What do you think is the safest and best horse fencing?|||The safest I find is post and rail, because it has been built specifically for horses - is strong and if kept well maintained, horses will find it very difficult to escape or injure themselves on it. It also is quite an attractive fencing. Especially with hedging around it.

Stone walls are pretty good aswell, and the plus side is they can act as shelters - the trouble is they are pretty expensive to build just for a field.

Electric fencing on it's own is no a safe form of fencing, the battery can go out when you're not there - and horse's ears are sensitive enough to know when it isn't switched on: cue an escape. Or if anyone's horses are like mine, they'll just barge it or jump over it - if the electric fencing was kept on it's own, that would spell horses on the road.|||i like the poly wire or the thick plasticy poly wire not sure the correct name but it's amazing it stretches and holds up too 1000lbs before breaking so its very horse safe, and you can get it in electric

my fence is electric on top and on the middle

but all the wires are white and look the same so the horses can't tell which one is electric and which one is normal so they just stay away from the fence as best as possible!!

one time my pony did get caught in the fence (before we had the electric wire up) and his foot got caught in the wire i un-tangles him with no scratches

my neighbors have barbed wire and my horse got caught up in it and had scars all over his legs

anyways it's the nicest for the price

i would never do iron or metal moles because horses can get legs caught and break legs and ankles and just becomes a big mess

this poly wire has a lot of give and bend to is a foot goes through the fence the foot can come right back in with ease|||well i really like wooden fences but they can be hard to keep up, i also like electric if you get the thicker white kind. My horse used to run through electric fences but then once there was the elctric fence and wooden he doesn't anymore. even if yu have a wooden fence you should have electric tape with it just because if they really wanted to they could just run through the wood.

hope i helped!|||I don't have my own farm, but when I do, I'm getting equisafe fencing. Its farily new, but it looks amazing. Its pretty much indestructable, UV resistant, can withstand huge temp. changes, you can electrify it if you want, and it comes in different colors. Plus it looks absolutely beautiful! www.equisafe.com|||Although I myself have never used this fencing, i have seen it used by some pretty fancy barns, and it works really well. What they have is some wooden posts and a metal plasticy strip replacing what would usually be wood. It's safe, and won't hurt the horse.

:3|||The safest would probably be post and rail fencing, but that can be expensive. I would go with electric fencing it's safe and cheaper. Hope this helped! Happy fencing =D|||iron although i don't own hourses iron will last the longest and willl be very durible.

How good of an exercise is fencing?

i'm thinking of doing a free summer clinic(i've never fenced before) and was just curious,is fencing a good exercise? does it work out any muscles?|||The quality of fencing as an exercise really depends how much effort you put into it. In the years that I have fenced and coached, I have seen casual fencers devote minimal effort and barely break a sweat and highly competitive individuals work to exhaustion. If you have never fenced before, you will be working out muscles that aren't typically heavily strained in other aerobic sports such as running, soccer, etc; although already being physically fit helps tremendously.

Years ago, in high school, I ran cross-country and played varsity soccer. I was far more exhausted after my first real fencing bout than a typical work-out for those sports.

Fencing works heavily on leg and torso muscle groups and does not require heavy upper body strength. Finesse and dexterity are typically more important.

Hope this helps.|||Yeah, you'll get tired, and it's a pretty good workout if you are doing it right.|||Fencing is an anaerobic activity. It's a bit like football or boxing. The activity is strenuous for periods, with breaks in between. It burns quite a few calories: the last tournament I participated in, I wore my heart monitor and it recorded 2100 calories in 3 hours. The legs are the primary working group - quads/calfs/glutes. It is the mental aspect of fencing that often takes hold of individuals and involves them more than they were originally expecting - providing a form of exercise that is never boring - hence more likely to be undertaken.

Are there any good clubs where I can practice fencing in South America?

How should I approach my college professor about missing fencing class because of an injury?

I recently injured my hamstring and rest is vital to recovery. Unfortunately this means that I won't be able to participate in my fencing class next week. Should I e-mail him and tell him that I just won't be there at all or should I show up and just watch everyone else fence? Thanks for your advice!|||If you attend the class, you will learn all that the class has to offer with the exception of physical participation only, you will be giving a very positive impression by doing everything within your limitations to give full participation to the class in consideration of your injury, and you will probably receive full credit for attendance and participation. You can make up the physical part after your recuperation.

If you don't attend the class, you will miss everything else of value to be learned, and leave no positive impressions. You may also be marked as "absent".

If you care about the class, why wouldn't you attend, watch, and learn?

Fencing.......?

Who out here fences? Do u fence foil epee or sabre? I fence foil. Should i swith to sabre?|||I would go to sabre it is much better and I like it a lot.|||i do fencing and i'm in Epee. what i love about epee is the fact you can hit anywhere from the toe to the head allowing u to think of diffrent stragedies.

if you like to think about possiblilities i would say epee, if you like to be quick and whip like i would say saber and foil on the middle

|||foil definatly its so much more of a challenge its reeal fun i have fenced for a long time my dad has for 30+ years we all fence foil if not sabre if fun too but not eppe its for people who cant fence and need the whhole body to be a target to be good at it

Fencing..?

My parents are finally going to let me get a horse but first we have to put a fence up. I was wondering what the best kind of fence would be for 2 horses? I don't want it to be to expensive since I want to be able to help my parents out with it.|||I like PVC fencing best. It's extremely low maintenance, and while it will cost a lot initially, you won't have to be maintaining it all the time like you would with a wooden fence. That will save you money and time in the long run.

Some folks in my area use just a few strands of electric tape as their fencing, but I don't think I could ever do that myself. My choice would be PVC fencing with a strand of electric tape at the top.

Ramm is a good PVC fence brand - here is a link so you can get an idea. Keep in mind that you don't need to get a name brand fence like this, though - there are lower cost types out there.

http://www.rammfence.com/fence/categorie鈥?/a>|||woodedfencing|||it really depends on how many acres they will be on.up to two acres i would use wood fencing.three to five acres i would use hot tape fencing and six and above i would use barb wire fencing for money savings.but check in your area to see what fencing costs,wood fencing is sometimes cheaper in some areas and sometimes wire is cheaper so it depends on where you live.|||electric fending is fine but you probably want to use something nice and substantial round the outside maybe put electric strand on the inside or to divide up the park. use pos and rail if u can but its expensive and takes alot of upkeep. post and wire would be ok if u like. just avoid sheep wire or barbed wire!!!!!!|||For 4 acres they have at Tractor supply this stuff its called barbless wire. Its thick like barb wire but without the barbs if you are against barbed wire. Personally one of my 3 acre pastures is barbed wire but has a strand of shock wire at the top and it is about and inch closer in the pasture than the barbed wire and I also did the same thing on the bottom that way they can't get to the barbed wire. Personally I dont like hot tape. Alot of things can go wrong. I like just regular aluminum wire ran on a shock box. get metal t posts put them in the ground and run wire about 4-5 strands depending on how tall you want it. Horses can hear the shock in the wire and wont go near it.|||depends on how many acres and what type horses [how hot,how young] and whats on the other side of fence....a small area use pressure treated posts, wire fence and a strand of barb wire or elect tape on top...i have 20 acres and use 3 strands barb..where the pasture meats the woods...horses dont try to go there because theres no other horses to visit and no food there..along common pastures i use pressure posts and 3 boards [rough cut 2 by 6 posts abt 9 ft apart and 10 ft boards... if you have lots of cash...best looking and safest is vinyl covered wood or pure vinyl|||wood fence|||well, my parents are also going to let me bring my horse on to our property, and we are doing electric. eventually, we might upgrade, but electric is like the cheapest|||At my barn we have woodent posts with plastic coated thick wires* and in our ring we have pvc fencing*. How do i get a T-Post used for fencing out of the ground>?

I have several T-Posts that have shifted to a wrong angle...i am looking for a tool to help me get the T-Posts out without digging up the ground so i can put them back in in the correct angle to fix the fencing around the land...|||You can also use a long lever to ease them out. Clamp a block of wood firmly to the T-pots about 1ft. off the ground; position another block or blocks about 6" away from the post to act as a fulcrum; then placing you lever tip under the wood block clamped to the post and resting on the fulcrum pile, push down on the end. Post should ease out of the ground - no problem. If you are straining, perhaps your lever isn't long enough, and you may need extra block to build up the fulcrum level. Sounds complicated , but very easy in practise. Best of luck.|||Use a jack to get the t-post out of the ground. Wrap a heavy duty chain around the jack and the knobs on the sides of the t-post, binding the chain as you jack and it will pull the post right out of the ground.|||we use a car jack around our place. Wrap some heavy duty wire around the post, using the nubs to keep the wire in place, and the other end of the wire around the head of the jack and start pumping.|||Use a old cat bumper jack if you can not pull them by hand. Attach a arope to the post and tie it to the jack.

A farmer with 1200ft of fencing wishes to enclose a rectangular area and then divide it into three pens with f?

A farmer with 1200ft of fencing wishes to enclose a rectangular area and then divide it into three pens with fencing parallel to one side of the rectangle. Determine the dimensions that will yield the largest possible total area.

think of it as a rectangle with three equal parts in it.|||the total fencing: 2a+3b=1200.

Let x=b -%26gt;a = (1200-3x)/2

let f(x) is the area

f(x) = a*b (%26lt;- area of a rectangle)

f(x) = x * [ (1200-3x)/2]

find df(x)/dx = 600-3x. Set this equal 0. Find x

Since x = b, you can find a interm of b.

Dimensions are 200,and 300.|||Let x be the length of each pens be x, y be the length .

Perimeter =4x+y

4x+y=1,200

y=1,200-4x

Area = xy = x(1200-4x)=1,200x-4x^2

Area = 1200x - 4x^2

Differentiate with respect to x and set it equal to 0

dA/dx =1200-8x=0

8x=1200

x=150

y=1200-4(150)= 600

The dimension with largest area is 150 and 600 (parallel to one side)

d^2A/dx^2 =-8x = -8(150) %26lt; 0

This verifies that the area has been maximized.|||Let e = length of area, w = width of area, A = area of rectangle, f = total amount of fencing.

f = 2e+4w = 1200

e + 2w = 600

e = 600 - 2w

A = e*w = (600 - 2w)*w = 600w - 2w^2

Take the derivative of A.

A' = 600 - 4w

Set A' equal to 0 and solve for w.

600 - 4w = 0

600 = 4w

w = 150

A' is positive for w%26lt;150 and negative for w%26gt;150, so the maximum of A occurs at w = 150.

e = 600 - 2w = 600 - 2*150 = 300

The dimensions of the rectangle are 150 ft by 300 ft.|||Since you want to know the maximum TOTAL area, forget about the sub-dividing part (unless there is something missing from the problem statement). A square 300 ft on a side would give the maximum area. The total area would be 90000 ft^2.|||150x300

please dont listen to anyone else except ax. they're all wrong. please people, im in eighth grade and i did this in two minutes. it isnt that hard thank you ax for not being retarded.|||The Largest Possible area is yielded by a square (300x300x300x300). Therefore you would have 3 pens each 300x100.|||Do your own homework.

How do I find the dimensions of the fencing area?

A farmer wishes to put a fence around a rectangular field and then divide the field into five rectangular plots by placing four fences parallel to one of the sides. If the farmer can afford only 3000 yards of fencing, what dimensions will give the maximum rectangular area?|||ur two equations are-

6w + 2l = 3000 --%26gt; l=1500-3w

max = w x l

max= w(1500-3w)

=-3w^2 + 1500w

=-3(w^2 - 500w)

=-3(w^2 - 500w + 62500 - 62500)

=-3(w^2 -500w +62500) + 187,500

=-3(w - 250) ^2 +187,500

therefore, ur maximum occurs when w=250, and is equal to187,500

l=1500 - 3(250)

l=750|||calculus and differentiation, i'm sure

How effective is invisible dog fencing?

We are considering invisible fencing for our new dog this summer. Is there a minimum age requirement for the dog? Do these types of fences actually work?|||I have had this type of fencing for almost 4 years now and it keeps my dogs in their area exceptionally well.

I would recomend it highly.|||12 weeks or as long as your dog can understand simple commands

Report Abuse

|||Depends on the dog. Typically, dogs with thick coats don't feel the shock enough to be deterred. The fence will tell you the requirements for age and size on the packaging.|||When I checked into this type of fencing for my dog I wasn't advised of an age limit but they did tell me that it works better with certain breeds. I have a beagle (known as a stubborn dog) and was advised that he may not adjust to it, would probably just run thru it and keep going. Needless to say we didn't pursue it, but I have several friends who use this and it works well with their dogs. It requires a lot of maintenance and diligence on the part of the owner though. If your electricity goes out, it doesn't work, if the batteries die in the collar it doesn't work, you have to be careful not to accidentally dig up the wire (if you plant a tree, garden, etc.). And from what I was told some dogs absolutely freak out when they get zapped which can be harmful to the dog (have you seen the collar they must wear? - scary!!). Good luck with whatever you choose.|||They do work great with proper training of the dogs. I have a friend who has a big black lab, he used to escape conventional fences all the time...he was Houndini. He moved to a new home and installed the wireless fence and his dogs have yet to escape, even when he let the battery run down...lol. Just a precaution, you will keep your dogs in...but you won't keep the wildlife out, so if you have coyote or other predators in the area I would not leave your dog vulnerable and unattended, restricted by the wireless fence. I also recommend that you try the actual 'zap' level of the collar on yourself (I'm not kidding...I know this sounds crazy) if you are going to use it on an animal I think it behooves you to know exactly what the zap feels like so you have a complete understanding of how it works.|||It is much cheaper than a traditional fence. As far as how effective it is, that depends on how well you train the dog once it is installed. There is a training routine you go through after the fence is put in. Have them tell you all of the details about that before yo make a decision. I would no more want to teach my dog to stay in the yard by shocking him than I would want to teach him to sit, stay, etc. by shocking him. Some dogs, no matter how much you work with them, will take the shock and run through. Chances are that they will not take it again to get back in the yard. Also invisible fence doesn't protect your dogs from something else getting to them. I had a friend who's dog was almost killed by a pit bull because the pit bull could get in the yard but their dog wouldn't run out of the yard to get away. Personally I would never use it. It is all about the owners convenience, not the dogs'.|||Works great unless it is a HIGH STRUNG DOG like a border collie

a dog thats gotta get to what it sees, then ours takes the shock to go out but wont take the shock to come back, another bad point is it keeps YOUR dog in, it does NOT KEEP OTHER DOGS OUT|||My uncle's Shih-Zu runs through it about once a week.|||sometimes (usually) the dog relizes if it goes really fast it only hurts for a secound then it stops and the dog is free thus no they don't work|||I wouldn't trust my dogs' safety to one of those. Many dogs figure out that they just have to take the shock and they're free. Other problems can arise when the battery in the collar goes flat. Also, it does not protect your dog from other animals or people coming on to your property.

Get a real fence.|||This type of fencing only works on certain breeds. Dogs like greyhounds, whippets, huskies run too fast and are out of range before the fence activates. The packaging should tell you what breeds they recommend using it for, and which breeds are not suited to it.|||It really depends. If the dog is not dense, have thick fur, and overall do what it wants any way, they work fine. If your dog is (mine was) denser than a box of rocks and hard headed to boot they will just walk across the line and look at you. Be forwarned even if it doesn't look like it shocks your dog the collars hold a lot of power, not enough to hurt, but enough. :)

I am 15 years old and my height is 5 feet. I am an athletic person so I have an athletic body. I practice fencing 5 days a week for 3 hours daily. I would like to know what my ideal weight should be. Thanks|||you should weigh between 110-120.

Channel 7 has been showing a short promo on fencing during it's Olympics Coverage in the evenings. Does any body know the musical score used in the background?|||I don't know what the music is. But I know that it is false advertising. I've yet to see any coverage of the fencing at all.

What kind of shape do you need to be in for fencing?

I'm about to go off to college and I plan to join the fencing club or take a class at least. I've never attempted fencing before and I want to be prepared. Should I be in the best shape of my life for this or should I at least build up my endurance or stamina?|||I did fencing for years, and it is pretty hard. You need to focus on your leg muscles, especially your thighs. You're lg will be bent whenever you fence so this is absolutely necessary. Also, endurance can't hurt, you're coach wil be making you go non-stop. Then one other thing is your grip, but only if you fight sabre (you may know this, but fencing actually has three divisions: foil, epee, and sabre). Finally, work on reaction, because quickness is what separates you from the pack, and try to find a way not to sweat so much because it gets sweaty in your lame (pronounced "lameh" not "lame") Hope you found this helpful :)|||To be honest, if you are just doing fencing for fun I don't think it really matters. However, it wouldn't hurt if you ran a extra few laps every day.

You will naturally build up stamina and endurance in fencing training.

But if you are planning on entering competitions then it would definitely be wise to build up endurance and stamina.|||I've never fenced but I've heard you have to have really strong legs. You should probably do lots of squats and lunges to prepare.|||I tried fencing and the rigors of training weren't that bad, but I really got annoyed with getting poked in the ribs by that darn foil! So I threw in the towel after about 2 weeks.|||It doesnt matter what shape your in, fencing will get you in better shape, if your gonna workout for a certain sport then the best way to do it is to do that certain sport!

What does it cost to field a NCAA fencing team?

Hi, I am trying to figure out what it takes to revive a NCAA fencing program from one of the schools that got the varsity removed back in the 90's.

Any idea what it costs to field a team?|||I have no idea, but here's how you can find out. Find a school with a varsity fencing program and ask the athletic director. Make sure to inquire about transportation costs for tournments.

Another possibility is to partner with a local fencing club. That happens with all the collegiate crew (rowing) in the DC area.

Good luck!

Chain link fencing for dog kennel- can you buy and attach bottom pipe separatley?

Looking for a dog kennel, had an offer for some cheap chain link fencing BUT it has no 'pole' on the bottom, concerned dogs would just push it out. anything you can buy separately to keep it solid along the bottom to keep dogs from pushing it out?|||You can buy galvanized pipe, but it should be put on with proper fixtures on the bottom of the upright, you can also stretch air line cable along the bottom weaving it in and out every two foot or so, either way if your dogs like to dig they can still get out, probably the cheapest and simplest solution is to buy chicken wire and dig a trench under the fence to the inside of the run and bury it, you can wire a foot or so of the chicken wire to the bottom of the fence then take it thru the bottom on the fence at least two foot and bury....depending on what size run you are putting in it might be easier to put a regular kennel run up, if you want to do it right check with Crest Line Kennel Runs..|||I am not sure. I had bought some tool room caging and it works great. It is welded chain link that is welded to a frame they measure 5' x 9' and they bolt together.|||yes you're right. without the bottom rail for it to attach to the dogs will just push their way out of the bottom. you can get the parts you need at lowes or home depot. you need to get two pieces that attach to the corner poles and then the rail goes into the socket on that. you can also get the wirelike ties that fastens it to the rail. fasten every couple of feet to make sure it is good and tight. any slack will allow them to get out.|||Ya what Bert said, that it|||Sure. You would need to by chain link top rail pipe, top rail pockets and clamps. You then cut the top rail pipe to fit between your upright posts and clamp in place. It should look just like your top rail, but be on the bottom of the fence. Then wire-tie the chain link fabric to the bottom just like the top.

Bert|||sure , try lowes, or your local lumber yard,

if you attach ,a new pipe, , use wire to attach the chain link,

and place stones, i n the inside of the kennal, to prevent ,the dog from digging thru|||Yes, you can buy it all seperately, either at fencing supply stores or hardware stores.

The actual chain link is the inexpensive part. The posts, connectors and rails are all seperate purchases and the most expensive portion.

The least expensive option is to buy all seperately, at a Lowe's type of store and assemble it yourself.

Does fencing work slow down in the winter?

I am in my first year of running my fencing business, i started in March to try and make the most of the summer. i have heard work is seasonal but i was wondering how you guys survive, is there work in the winter? if so how do you market differently?

Thanks!|||Work slows in the winter. I am not a contractor, but what I have heard is that people get laid off at that time and they either look for a different job or end up on unemployment. Hope that helps you.

Although....I suppose if you live in a place where the sun always shines, the situation would be different! LOL!

What are some good shoes for fencing?

I've been using my running shoes for fencing and recently my friend told me i should buy fencing shoes. Do I have to? What are some good fencing shoes? And i've heard volleyball and tennis shoes work well to.|||Ideally, you should wear shoes that are intended for fencing, but to me I don't really have to because I'm not comfortable wearing fencing shoes. What I normally wear is a minimalist shoes, particulary Kigo Shel. It's actually designed for running and used as an aqua shoes because of its light weight and good cushion support. So far, so great. I've never had any problem at all and I love it. Highly recommended.

Hope this helps.

What is the most dangerious type of fencing?

Foil, Epee, Or Sabre?

currently i am fencing Foil. i have on a 3 weapon mask, plastron, jacket, padded gloves, but no knickers just sweatpants. is this enough protection is it possible to get severely hurt with this equipment on? |||nothing

|||No, fencing is completely safe!

It depends on your opinion about which weapon is the "most dangerous".

I suppose that It could be considered sabre (my weapon), but that's usually the weapon that is the most fast paced, and sabre fencers tend to be a bit more aggressive.

Still, the worse injury that I've ever received was a metal splinter, or a bad bruise-take your pick.

And, the worse injury that I've ever seen was a sprained ankle from someone retreating too fast.

You can never really be prepared for everything, but you should be fine. I fence both epee and foil for fun as well as sabre as my weapon of choice. All three are very safe and you should come to no major harm.

It's cheapest to buy it at feed stores, but if you don't have any of those in your area, box stores like Lowes and Home Depot carry rolls of it, as well as stakes to anchor it in.

What are some good colleges that offer fencing?

Looking around at colleges and I'm trying to decide which one has a better fencing team, or at least has one. Thanks.|||Penn State won 2007 NCAA National Fencing Championship and St. Johns was the runner up. In fact Penn State leads colleges in Fencing national championships 10 in all.

Notre Dame has fencing team , Duke, and of course you have the IVY League colleges. Ohio State won the national championships in 2004 and I read an article in SI about how well funded their athletic program in regards to how non revenue sports like fencing manage to get funded.

What are the dimensions, in feet, for a rectangular garden that will use exactly 80 feet of fencing?

Mr. James wants to plant a garden that would be in the shape of a rectangle. He was given 80 feet of fencing to enclose his garden. He want the length to be 10 more than twice the width.

What are the dimensions, in feet, for a rectangular garden that will use exactly 80 feet of fencing?

Please explain your answer!|||L = (2W +10)

so 2(2W + 10) + 2W = 80

6W + 20 = 80

6W = (80 - 20)

W = 10ft L = 30ft.|||do you own homework|||We know:

Perimeter will be the amount of fencing, 80 feet.

Perimeter of rectangle is one side + one side + one side + one side.

A rectangle has two sides the same (length) and two other sides the same (width).

Formula to use is 2x + 2y = 80 (x = length, y = width)

Length is supposed to be +10 than 2 times width. This can be written as x = 2y + 10

Now we can substitute x into first formula:

2x + 2y = 80; x = 2y + 10

2(2y+10) + 2y = 80

4y + 20 + 2y = 80

6y + 20 = 80

6y = 80-20

6y = 60

y = 60/6

y = 10

To find x (length) we place 10 into formula x = 2y + 10:

x = 2(10) + 10

x = 20 + 10

x = 30

Dimensions of rectangle are 10, 30,10, 30 (10 is width and 30 is length)

How do i keep my dog from digging out under wood panel fencing?

Have laid chicken wire down on top of the hole, but looks unsightly. Have tried electric fencing. (she liked it!). A neurotic Shar-pei and owner.|||i have a JR terrier mix and they love to dig !!,,,,,the best thing to do is to buy concrete blocks...they are 16 or 18" long, 6 or 8 " wide, and 3" tall, they weigh 25.5 lbs each and cost like 90cents or $ 1.20 each one, at Lowe's or home depot....they come a little smaller and lighter, like 10.5 to 11 lbs, but my 30 lb. dog can move these easily with his paws so your Shar-pei probably can also....you get these blocks and lay them end to end, tightly touching each other, no gaps, up against the wood fence, one row is 6-8 " wide...if your dog digs under this, you can make it two wide, or install landscape timbers against the fence on the other side...actually, the best way is to put one set of blocks on each side of the fence, that way if he digs under one set, and gets under the fence, he won't be able to surface on the other side, because the blocks will prevent him from exiting up...if this is not clear or you don't understand what i mean, email me back, and i'll answer any questions you have !! i had to install 2 sets of landscape timbers, one on top of the other, with rebar-2 pieces to each timber, and my dog dug beneath the timbers, in-between the rebar...that is when i added the concrete blocks..first the light ones, 11 lbs each, but he moved them...so i went with the heavier blocks, 25.5.lbs each..and that stopped him dead in his tracks...he could not move those or dig beneath them...he gave up..i had created a virtual prison, and stopped a digging terrier, doing what his breed was trained for, digging out vermin..and my problem was solved....call me if anything i wrote was unclear or confusing, email me that is...hope this solves your problem !! good luck to you !!|||cover the wire with dirt.|||weird! Than he has something arround his neck, it comes in the set. It is not harmful. So train him to get used to it. Only schock him when he starts digging. Eventlually he will get the message. I am a dog lover, and I knew I will get hate mails from all you weired Animal control freaks. Never mind that. I believe in doing the right thing with my dog. And it has stopped with him. The chicken wire is usually a good bet, if you don't like the appearance, bury under the dirt and allow grass to grow over top of it.

How Much Does it Cost to Run Electric Horse Fencing?

For about 1 1/2 acres fenced with electric fencing how much would the electric bill go up?|||You will hardly notice any increase in your electricity usage. We ran almost 4 acres of 1 strand of electric rope and our bill really has not changed in a year. To put up the fence, it probably cost us about $300 (with the receiver and the rope and fence connectors). Our horses respect the fence and we have no more broken spots where they can get out :-) (which was amazing, because my filly is a major houdini and squeezes out of everything).|||if you are carefull and dont let the fence give out shocks to things its shouldnt like trees, bushes also dont leave it on the ground when you get the horses out, when the fence is giving out shocks it uses up more power. i can honestly say changing from post and rail to electric was the best thing i done. i dont have to replace broken rails anymore!! and surpisingly it doesnt cost much to charge if you save the battery as much as you can like turning it off when there not in there. :)|||T-Posts run about $3-4 our here. You also need tape and insulators. A big roll of tape can cost $100-200 and insulators can be about $10 a bag. (Tape insulators are more expensive). You also need a ground rod.

We bought a Gallagher Solar Powered Fencer. The thing cost us around $200, but it's WONDERFUL. It doesn't go out if the power goes out and it's reliable. What should i know about fencing? And would it be wise to buy my own outfit?

And they're offering the suits for $50 a month. Should i pay the 50 or just buy my own suit?|||Rent the suit for the first month to be sure you like it. Check around your area for a large sporting goods store (many don't carry fencing gear, but some do) and check the price for gear. In the long run, it may be cheaper to buy your own.

Also contact your local branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism. They're a living history group that studies life in pre-17th century Europe, including fencing and sword and shield combat. Has anyone had any expereince with fake wood fencing, or vinyl fencing?

How do they compare price and durability wise to real wood fencing?|||I would have used the plastic wood fencing system on my current project, but the price was over my budget. I think in the long run it is actually cheaper to maintain as there actually is no maintenance as opposed to the redwood I used which will require annual water seal application. I went with the steel posts and redwood rails and slats. If you want a maintenance free fence that will last for over 30 years (I think that's what the one I was considering were warrantied for), then You will be better off with the plastic wood.|||I bought vinyl fencing and it is much easier and cheaper to maintain in the long run as you don't have to paint it just wash it down and always looks fresher.|||Its OK, unless you live in ARIZONA, vinyl and superheat don't mix|||I have experience installing real wood fencing, I bought it at Home Depot, it is pretty inexpensive, you buy them in 6 or 8 foot lengths. Easy to install, just use wood screws, they will last a few years, and longer if you use a sealer to keep the moisture out. The fake wood or vinyl wood be good, but if you buy the white vinyl the sun would probably give it a beating and cause fading.

A rectangular field runs along a river requires fencing on only 3 sides. What is the maximum area possible wit?

A rectangular field runs along a river requires fencing on only 3 sides. What is the maximum area possible with 500 meters of fencing?

Please explain this in algebraic form and in detail, because I am lost. Thx!

The answer is supposed to be: 31250m^2.|||500 meters of fencing on 3 sides:

x: width of rectangle in meters

y: height of rectangle in meters

lets say the fence runs twice the height and once the length (otherwise just define height/width the other way around ;)

so 500 = x + 2y

you're looking for the biggest area possible. the area is

A(x,y) = x*y.

to find a maximum/minimum of a function, take it's derivative and set it to equal zero.

A'(x,y) = 0

since this is a function in x and y, it's much easier if you first get rid of one of the variables, and then derive, do that with the help of your boundary condition from above

500 = x + 2y

x = 500 - 2y

therefore

A(y) = (500 - 2y)*y = 500y - 2y^2

derive to y and set to equal zero

A'(y) = 500 - 4y = 0

4y = 500

y = 125 m

x = 500 - 2y = 250 m.

The area then is

A = 125m*250m = 31250 m^2|||Area = A = L*W

P = 2*w + L

P = 500 m

500 - 2w = L

Area = (500 - 2w)*w

A = 500w - 2w^2

A = -2(w^2 - 250w )

A = -2(w^2 - 250w + (250/2)^2 ) + 2*125^2

A = - 2(w- 125)^2 + 2*125^2

The width is 125

The length is 250

P = 2w + L = 2*125 + 250 = 500 which is the check.|||500= 2w + L

area = w * L

area = w(500-2w)

area = 500w - 2w^2

d/dw(area) = 500 - 4w = 0 =%26gt; 500 = 4w =%26gt; w = 125

500-250 = L = 250

area = 250(125) = 31250m^2

w = 125

L = 250

Many, many years ago I had a shepard/hound who could escape any yard and a cute little beagle who could dig to China. I had to put up a 6 foot fence and dig down a foot to lay chicken wire below the surface so he couldn't get under the fence. What you have to do for your babies!!!|||We had a small fenced in yard that was only board fence so we put up chicken wire and buried into the ground a little - however I have a beagle who likes to dig and a german shepard that likes to jump so we ended up installing the electric fence around the perimeter of the yard. It wasn't too hard to install and we actually only buried one of the wires as we just stapled it to the top of the existing fence. Out of the three years we had it the only time they got out was if the battery went dead on the collar and we didn't realize it. I would recommend installing the electric fence but depending on your dogs they might go through it anyway without another boundary to keep them in.

What are some less expensive options for fencing in a large yard that will look good and help keep our dog in?

We just bought a house with a large backyard. We want to fence it in for privacy and to keep our german short-haired pointer contained. Fencing is so expensive but we absolutley need to do something so we can just let the dog out to run and play|||Trellis panels or curved panel fencing would be pretty effective.|||There are 3 main types of fence that will meet your needs for a fence that offers privacy, is economical, and will keep your pets safely in your yard:

Chain Link w/ privacy slats or lattice: This is the cheapest type of fence. 100 linear ft. will cost around $1200 (rough estimate) for 6ft high galvanized, then add another $400 - $600 or so if you want privacy slats (plastic or aluminum inserts which turn your chain link fence into a privacy fence)

Wood Privacy Fence: Wood is a traditional, economical fence material that has a natural appeal. The only issue with wood is the maintenance and upkeep required, but if you want the affordability and don't mind staining or painting every few years, then wood is a great choice. 100 linear ft of 6' high wood privacy fencing will cost around $1200 (this really depends on the type/quality of wood used).

Vinyl Privacy Fence: Vinyl Fencing is more expensive, but also looks better (in my personal opinion), provides better privacy, and is easier to install DIY without specialized tools. Vinyl is also very low maintenance, usually just requiring routine hosing off to keep it clean. 100 linear ft of white vinyl privacy fence will cost you around $2400 depending on what options you choose and how many gates you need.|||well you have one option. Use a garden mesh steel fence with posts. They can go up to a few feet. It is a lot cheaper than a "real" fence, will work, and easy to do. Look at the yardgard 4' and the posts on this link.

En Garde (on guard): this is the "at the ready position". Stand with your feet together pointing forward, then make a right angle by putting your lead foot (your dominant side, if your right handed, put your right foot in front) in front of your back foot, which you will now point toward the side(left foot pointing left if your are a RIGHTIE, and right foot pointing right if you are a LEFTIE) and so that your heels are touching. Now, lift up your lead foot and place it so that your heel is where your toes were. (your feet should be just shoulder width apart) Bend your knees slightly...This is En Garde position, this position is where everything starts in fencing.

Advance (step forward): From En Garde....lift up your lead toes, and slightly kick up on your lead heel, now bring your heel to where your toes were...as you bring the rest of your lead foot flat to the floor, move your back foot underneath you...it should be one motion...if you look at your position...you should be back in the basic En Garde

Retreat (step backward): From En Garde...push off your lead foot and slightly lift your back foot, move your foot back ward and as your back foot lands on the floor bring your lead foot backwards as well (your toes should be where your heel was)....your should be in En Gadre again!

Lunge: From En Garde lift your lead foot up so that you are on the heel, then "kick" out your lead foot as far as you can and land on your heel, then put your toes on the ground. (it's like a reach and roll)...your back leg should be completely straight.

Recover (back to En Garde from the lunge): simply bend yur back knee and pull yourself backwards into the En Garde position

--------

These are the basic footwork movements. Basic blade movements are attacks and parries (parry riposte)...(parry=defend; riposte=attack after a parry)

I am a fencer (3 years now) and am also an aspiring writter...I would be more than happy to see what you have written about the dueling training so far and to help you with it. ;-)

The best way for you to experience fencing would be to actually do it...

you could go to a local fencing club and tell them what you are doing, I'm sure they would love to help you out, we fencers love to talk about our sport since we are really a small group.

Here is a website that gives a list of all US fencing clubs and schools!

Good luck!|||This is not a simple question to answer. What period are your characters in? Where are they based? Classically there were three key "schools" of fencing in Europe, French, Italian and Spanish. Spanish was poor and fell by the wayside and for many years French and Italian techniques were taught. Non-Europe will give you Japanese and Chinese amongst many others....

Your period will also determine what sword your characters will use. Foil is a sport sword, rather than a "real live" sword and you may find that your characters need to use a Rapier or somesuch, if they are learning "for real" in historical times..

As for movements then there are many, but beginners usually start by learning the on-guard position (these days the French school is almost exclusively taught - I used to teach Fencing and I never came across any other school). You then learn to move and to lunge. You will move to simple attacks, then learn to parry and then to riposte.

Depdning on where you hold your blade you will be in Quarte, Sixte, Septime or Octave (there are others for the more advanced) but these four positions cover the main defenses across the trunk of the body. Quarte and sixte are the most used and are what you would call "normal" positions - how you would imagine a fencer to stand. Septime and Octave are used to protect the lowe body and the blade is angled downward.

Other movements:

Ballestra (small jump and then lunge) - used to get extra reach.

Flesche (fr. for arrow) - A launched attacke culmiating in a hit as you run past your oppoenet. Make it count as to miss means that you will be wide open to a riposte.

Parry - to deflect an attack

Riposte to attacke directly after a parry.

There are loads more. See the link for some books that might help you out. No. 6 on the list might be the best.

Other swords not mentioned might include Epee, Sabre and for "real" ones - cutlass, shortsword... the list is endless!
