What are your experiences with using electric fencing with chickens?
I'd like to keep a neighbor's dog away from my chicken flock. What are your experiences with keeping dogs away from chickens with electric fencing?
My main concerns are:
1)Can chickens easily get in and out if needed with one or two wires?
2)How effective are electric fences at keeping dogs out?
The area I'm considering for electric fencing is around 40'x40'.|||we raised pigs this summer using only 2 strands of electric fence, the chickens went in and out at will, once of twice it appeared like one got zapped but most of the time they didn't.
It did keep the pigs in as intended :)
If the dogs get tagged once or twice they will avoid it. Our collie wouldn't get within 40 feet of the fence after he touched it with his nose.|||dinner.|||uhh dont pee on it|||I'd recommend chicken wire instead. If your chickens are free running, fence them in chicken wire. If the dogs continue to harass them, I've found that dogs are unhurt by electric fencing, but it always sends them running.
Hope this helps.|||They use electric fencing to keep cows in the barn yard If you have it to low to the ground the dog will jump it and if you have to high they can go under it and the chickens can fly over it if you haven't done anything with their wings to keep them from flying.
