I started taking fencing lessons in the USA, but my coach fenced in France and knows a good place to get gear there. I will be in England and Paris over the summer, and want to get gear there- fencing mask, plastron, jacket, pants, and epee. However, I know that you have to somehow deal with customs when bringing things purchased in one country into another. What exactly is involved, will there be any trouble?
Thank you!|||You should be able to transport these items as checked baggage. Just declare them on the Customs form you'll fill out on the way back. Be prepared to pay whatever duties may be applicable. Alternately, you may be able to have them shipped via UPS or FedEx.|||Jessica, purchase the stuff there, and use it there, too. Keep your receipts, and when the Customs Officer asks if you have anything to declare, tell him about the fencing gear, and that you used it while in Europe. There probably will not be any duty on it.
You can check it as baggage, provided it is properly packed, and it will be included in your weight allowance. Some airlines allow some extra for sports equipment, or have a special rate for it. Check with your carrier.
Regards,
Dan
